The urge to belong to someone and maintain a relationship is one of the basic human needs. Marriage is a social institution that responds to this basic human need. But recent times witness an alarmingly rising rate of divorce and separation, making marital relationship a distressing factor rather than one that augments the well-being of the people. The purpose of this study was to develop an intervention program for enhancing couples communication and marital satisfaction and to pilot test its feasibility and usability in the field of marriage therapy for enhancing marriage quality. Development of the program involved integration of qualitative and quantitative research designs. Primary Communication Inventory and Dyadic Adjustment Scale were used to measure the level of communication and marital satisfaction among the couples; interviews and Focused-Group Discussions were carried out to get a better understanding. Basing on these, a nine modular intervention was developed integrating the communication and emotion constructs of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). The program was subjected to expert validation by six inter-disciplinary experts and pilot tested with six couples. The intervention was positively received by the participants and the results of the pilot test showed improvement in the level of communication and marital satisfaction among the couples.Keywords

The present study examined the possible predictive effect of burnout on the quality of life of nurses working in the hospital setting. Participants involved 91 selected Filipino staff nurses employed in private hospitals in Quezon City, Philippines who completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory and WHO Quality of Life-Bref that measured burnout and quality of life respectively. Results of the study showed a significantly negative relationship between nurse burnout and quality of life. Moreover, a regression analysis of the data showed that a significant variance of 90.7% in physical, 92.2% in psychological, 82.5% in social, and 91.8% in environmental aspects of the quality of life can be accounted for by burnout namely emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. Significant results also showed no difference in the research variables when respondents are grouped according to gender and civil status. Overall, the present study showed clear and vivid inference that burnout had adverse impact on the various aspects of a person's well-being and quality of life. Thus, this correlational and analytical study recommends the need for a psychotherapeutic intervention program to be developed that can reduce burnout and improve the quality of life among nurses.Keywords

Burnout syndrome is an alarming issue in the modern work culture and its prevalence has amplified extensively as compared to the past. Psychiatric nurses, due to the peculiar nature of their work are heavily exposed to the damaging effects of burnout. This study was aimed at developing an intervention program for alleviating burnout and ameliorating quality of life of the nurses employed in psychiatric hospitals in Kerala and to pilot test its viability and usability in the clinical practice. The researcher employed a mixed research approach particularly the sequential exploratory design in the program development phase. Maslach Burnout Inventory-HSS and WHOQOL-bref were used respectively to assess the level of burnout and quality of life of the psychiatric nurses. In order to have a better knowledge of the current scenario and prevalence of burnout among the mental health nurses, researchers carried out need-assessment survey, semi-structured interviews and focused-group discussions. Basing on the insight received from these assessment procedures, researchers developed an eight-modular intervention program, Positive Self-Process Program (PSPP), integrating the Multi-dimensional Theory of Burnout and Self-Compassion Theory. The newly developed intervention program was content validated by eight inter-disciplinary experts and content validation showed excellent Cronbach's co- efficient (α .90). PSPP was pilot tested for its feasibility with 10 nurses engaged in mental health services. The intervention program had a positive effect on the participants of the pilot study. This was validated through the statistical analysis of the data using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, which showed reduced burnout and improved quality of life.Keywords

This study looked at the relationship between the Mental Health Inventory-38 and the NEO-FFI-3 among Filipinos. The Mental Health Inventory-38 is intended as a broadband measure o f mental health and well-being. The NEO-FFI- 3 is intended as a brief version o f the NEO-PI-3, which describes personality in terms o f the Five Factor Model, namely Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Participants were 1040 Filipino citizens between 18 to 6 6 years old. Among the five factors, Neuroticism had the strongest negative association with mental health and Psychological Well-Being, while having the strongest positive association with Psychological Distress. Neuroticism also dominated correlations with the MHI-38 subscales. Correlations with Extraversion were modest in comparison for both the MHI-38 global indices and subscales. Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Openness are poorly represented in the MHI-38. The pattern o f correlations calls the validity o f some MHI-38 constructs into question.Keywords
